The Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the SCF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults.
The SCF provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies, is accepted as a recipient and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation up to six years and the age of 25. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living. All Shawn Carter Foundation Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring SCF Scholars. While we’d like to serve all students who fit the criteria for our scholarship, we have a finite number of spots for new and returning scholars in a given academic year. Our typical scholarship recipients demonstrate resiliency in the face of hardship and give back to their communities. First-time Shawn Carter Foundation scholarship recipients generally have GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0 and are the first in their family to attend college. During the 2017-18 academic year, 61% of our scholarship recipients had annual household incomes below $40,000 and 72% came from single parent homes. We do a week of staff training, and 7 one-week sessions of camp. We see about 336 campers every week between the ages of 9-13. Almost all of our campers come from the state of Florida, which makes us different than many camps out there. This season we run June 2nd to July 27th. Any staff who works for us become eligible to apply for the Van Duren Scholarship. This scholarship is up to $5,000 a year for 4-years. Every year is a new year, so a student has the opportunity to get more money every year based on their academic and personal performance. To apply, go to www.feyc.org and select ‘Summer Camp Staff’. .. |
